LCHS Virtual Enterprise Visits New York City
Submitted by Hope McDow of Lawrence County High School
The Lawrence County High School Virtual Enterprise firm, Alpha & Omega visited New York City April 9th-13th for the VE International Trade Fair.
Students work tirelessly during the semester to prepare for this highly anticipated event. Numerous company hours were spent perfecting their booth, catalog, website, and sales techniques in order to represent LCHS among students from all over the world.
The students were honored to be a Semi-Finalist in the prestigious Catalog Competition.
The VE International Trade Fair was held on Thursday April 11th. An estimated 3,000 students attended this year’s event, with Tennessee, California, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia being represented.
Students from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Germany, Indonesia, and Romania were also in attendance. LCHS students were enthused to meet people.
They made friends with students from Austria that gave the students a heart with the words “We Love Y’all” written upon it in an attempt to poke fun at our southern dialect.
Students and chaperones were also able to enjoy many of the excellent sites and restaurants that New York City has to offer.
Famous sites such as the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, Madame Tussads Wax Museum, Times Square, St. Paul’s Chapel, and the 9-11 Memorial were visited. Students also enjoyed wonderful views of the Statue of Liberty while riding the Staten Island Ferry.
Another highlight of the trip was touring the NBC Studios. Students were able to view where Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Fallon, and the Nightly News with Brian Williams and Rock Center are recorded. A great time was also had at Yankee Stadium watching the Yankees take on the Orioles.
Broadway is always an important highlight and exciting part of the trip for the students. This year the group saw Matilda on its opening night of production and enjoyed a remarkable show.
Spotting celebrities is always an exciting part of the trip and this year was no disappointment. Students spotted Alec Baldwin arriving to rehearse for his play “Orphans”. During their visit to The Today Show, students were able to interact with many members of the crew.
Traveling to New York this year were LCHS students Bailey Barnett, Kristin Burdette, Dylan Guthrie, Ramsey Ferguson Colton Hobbs, Hannah Stanford, Lexie Tietgens, Dylan True, and Meg Watson along with LCHS Virtual Instructor, Hope McDow.
Also attending were LCHS teachers Melissa Brazier and Holly True, along with Shannon Watson and Kyle McDow.
The LCHS Virtual Enterprise students would like to sincerely thank community members and businesses for the unending support given this year during fundraising and business sponsorships in order to make this trip a possibility for the students.
Without the support of Lawrence County, these students would not be able to experience such an exciting opportunity.
